FORT MEADE, Md. — Several people were injured on Wednesday after a shooting near the National Security Agency’s campus at Fort Meade, in Maryland, but an agency spokesman said that it did not appear their injuries had been caused by gunfire.

Officials said the episode did not appear to be linked to terrorism, and that there was no ongoing safety or security threat.

Tommy Groves, an N.S.A. spokesman, said that a vehicle had tried to enter its campus without authorization shortly after 7 a.m. Weapons were fired in the course of the episode and several people were transported to local hospitals. But he said that preliminary reports did not suggest they had been shot.

The episode occurred at the campus’s Canine Road gate, a Fort Meade spokeswoman said. Fort Meade’s Fire and Emergency Services unit responded. The military’s Cyber Command is also located at the base.

Pictures from the scene showed a black S.U.V. with its trunk open being held near the gate. Highway 32 near Fort Meade was closed in both directions but was reopened around 9 a.m.

The White House said that the president had been briefed on the shooting, and offered thoughts and prayers to everyone affected.
